Centrum Advance, Product Overview

This product is a combination of different vitamins (hence multivitamins) and essential minerals. It was formulated with the intent of providing nutrients to our body when we can’t get them via normal diet.

It used to be simple, with advertising line “Complete from A to Zinc”. Today, the Centrum brand of multivitamins have evolved into different sub-brands ranging from formulations that are for kids, to the ones that are designed to help adults and the elderly.

With its affordability and available via “over the counter”, it has gained popularity among the masses.

But like any other drug formulations, it has both good and bad. Although in most countries, this can be bought “over the counter” in pharmacies and in online stores, we encourage caution in take Centrum.

A supervision of a physician is highly encouraged.

The Good

According to its label and drug literature, it has especially blended nutrient combinations to support a wide range of benefits, such as:

  1. Energy – helps your body unlock energy with B-vitamins.
  2. Immunity – supports your immune system with more Vitamin A, C and E, pus Selenium and Zinc.
  3. Healthy Skin – helps contribute to healthy appearance and skin with adjusted levels, Vitamin A, C and E.
  4. Metabolism – contains Calcium which contributes to the normal function of digestive enzymes and B vitamins to aid in the metabolism of fats, and proteins…

… and other benefits like healthy heart, healthy eyes, and strong bones.

The Bad

Actually, not so bad.

With being complete from A to Zinc, and its masses-affordability, we give it a high rating of 9.

Some of the few negatives or disadvantages that I can see are, if someone is looking for a potent solution of let’s say Vitamin E, Centrum and its sub-brands are not the ideal product to buy.

As you can see in this label, the Vitamin E (dl-alpha-tocopheryl) is very minimal, just 50 I.U. which is far below what we recommend (400 I.U.). You are better off taking other brands known for high concentration of Vit. E if this specific vitamin is what you need.

Also, you will notice in this part of the package insert, the form of Vitamin A that’s included is a combination of Beta-carotene (from plant sources) and Retinyl Acetate (animal sources).

Strength of Centrum Advance

Beta-carotene, with its being plant-based, has no known side-effects… while Retinyl has.

Who is This Product For?

If you have a busy lifestyle and you need a balanced nutrition to support that lifestyle, this product is for you.

It is a complete daily multivitamin and multi-mineral supplement with especially-balanced nutrient combinations. At “one tablet a day”, it supplements your diet and lifestyle by containing 27 essential vitamins and minerals (although some can be compared to like “trace elements” for being little in volume).

But we’d like to remind you to not exceed the recommended daily dose.

Also, if taking other supplements, which may also contains Retinol form of Vitamin A (that from animal source), read the label of that supplement to ensure that you do not exceed the upper tolerable intake levels 3,000 micro gram of Retinol per day.

This product also contains Iron which can be harmful to children if taken in large dose. And in other articles here, it has been suggested that one should minimize taking iron supplements as sometimes the oxidized form can initiate free radical activity that is related to Cancer.

On the sides, people with salty-diet are not encouraged to take this product or any other multi-mineral product to avoid putting too much strain on the body’s excretory system.

Lastly, for pregnant and lactating women, you should first seek the advice of a medical doctor before using this product.

Our Final Opinion of Centrum Advance

Though not potent for special cases, with its being “Complete from A to Zinc” and affordability, we give it a very high rating. This food supplement is perfect for young adults with busy lifestyle.

  1. I’ve seen many commercials for Centrum, but never tried it. Complete from A to Zinc is a good slogan, making people think that it has all the vitamins that they would need. Reading your article, it looks like the goods definitely outweighs the bad. I will consider this when looking for a product providing multivitamins and nutrients. Thanks for the information!

    1. Exactly, the good outweighs the bad.

As long as you’re not pregnant or lactating (and obviously you’re not because you’re a man), and as long as you’re not in salty medication regimen, there’s no problem taking Centrum Advance.

Thanks for reading this Centrum Advance Review. Give it a try, as the results I’m getting is really good. This multivitamin + minerals supplement contain Lutein, which can help restore good eye sight. This is very important, especially for us staring at computers for long hours.

  2. Hi there

I am really interested in what vitamins I should be taking as I’m following a vegan diet.

Does this product provide me with sufficient B12 (which is lacking in a vegan diet) or should I supplement?

Can you also comment on the level of vitamin D and whether the amount is sufficient for winter time when light is very restricted (I also work in an office so don’t get to see the light of day very often!)

    Thanks for your attention.

    1. Thanks for reading.

Yes, it can provide you with 22 mcg of Cyanocobalamin (B12) and 600 I.U. of Cholecalciferol (Vit. D). Although in some cases, these amount is not sufficient, but for normal people like us, these can keep us going. One tablet a day will do.

  3. I’m looking for a vitamin that really helps boost my immune system unfortunately I suffer from IBS and have to be careful what new supplements I put in my body. Do you know if Centrum is easy to digest or should I possibly take it with food to help the absorption process? Thanks!

    1. Thank you for reading this Centrum Advance Review.

Since it contains Vitamins A, D, E and K, all of which are fat-soluble substances, it is best taken with food. Some may argue that Vitamins B and C are water soluble substances which are best taken without food, there are cases where Vitamin C can cause “upset stomach”. So, for me, I’d prefer taking them after meal.

By the way, it is important that you consult with your doctor with regard to this.

  4. I used to take supplements Vitamin B12, C, D and Biotin but stopped after reading that a lot of them don’t contain what they claim to and that it’s better just to get vitamins through a proper diet. Easier said than done since it’s tough to always eat a perfectly balanced diet. The idea of taking a daily supplement with all of the vitamins listed sounds like an easy way to make sure you get a wide range of vitamins that we all need.

The problem with multi-vitamins is that they all seem to contain calcium which I’ve been told to stay away from. I have a history of kidney stones and I’ve heard that people prone to kidney stones shouldn’t take calcium supplements.

Is 200 mg a high dose of calcium?

If so I should probably not try this.

    Thanks!

    1. That 200 mg of Calcium is okay. Besides, if you’re worrying about forming kidney stones, there’s a solution for that. Drink with it, Cranberry juice. It is proven to prevent forming kidney stones.

  5. From what I read Centrum Advance seems to have a well-balanced combination of nutrients for well being and health it also gives you energy is an antioxidant etc. It seems to be the perfect supplement for overall health and well being.

How does Centrum Advance measure up to the rest of the health supplements I see in health shops? I see it has excellent reviews on Amazon, one customer said that the tired feeling she had has been replaced with an energetic feeling. I shall be looking into this myself.

    1. When compared to other supplements out there, Centrum has it all. It’s complete from A to Zinc, although some vitamins or minerals are not in their potent concentrations. There are cases when our body demands for a higher dose of something, like for example, when someone is suffering from a severe deficiency of B-vtamins, Centrum is not the ideal product for those situations. But in “not so severe” or normal cases, it’s a good fit.

  6. I was glad to get your frank review of Centrum. I have been taking it for years, and now at 65 I take one gray tablet every morning. It is such a complete supplement that I don’t have to worry about taking this and that to get my daily requirements. It is interesting to note the ‘cons’ but to me they are not much at all. I guess i’ll be taking it for a long time to come.

    1. Yes, the ‘pros’ outweighs the ‘cons’. And it’s good to know that you’ve been taking it for years now. At your age of 65, you must be taking the sub-brand Centrum Silver, aren’t you? It has the kind of formulation that’s specific for your age range.

  7. Hi there,
This review clarifies a lot of thing in my mind. Like you said, a while ago it used to be a simple product and I remember buying it for my dad overseas. Now, with all the sub-brands out there it was confusing to buy the right product, however, your review has clarifies it very well and I know now that the centrum advance it the right product I was looking for.
Is there an age range for this product? I know that some similar product will set a starting age for example for people 50+ etc…
Thank you for a great review.

    1. Thanks for reading this Centrum Advance Review and for asking about age range for this product.

There’s another Centrum sub-brand which is specifically for that age range, the Centrum Silver 50. We’re going to do another review here dealing with that sub-brand, but if you want to learn more now about that sub-brand, you can browse Amazon for manufacturer’s explanation of that product.

  8. I’ve never really though about taking multivitamin tablet before, I guess that the overwhelming benefits of taking them are that they give you all the necessary vitamins you need to stay healthy.
Centrum seems like it’s got its things together and the brand slogan, a to zinc has a pretty nice ring to it.
Appreciate the review on the product, I’ll definitely look into it.
    Thanks

    1. Thanks for reading this review of Centrum Advance.

It is said, that we will need a truckload of fruits and vegetables just to get all the vitamins and minerals our body need. Since we need is just a small portion of those vitamins (a little about more), the idea of supplementation came to popularity. Now, we have tablets like Centrum Advance!
